Grade 3's Groundhog Day 2007
writing hand

The following songs and creative writing pieces, were written by our students in honour of ‘Groundhog day’ 2007.

In addition to a number of special learning activities we enjoyed that day, our class also read the story…
“Wake up, Groundhog!”
By Susan Korman
Illustrated by Eugenie Fernandes.

We hope you enjoy our songs and other writings!

By the way…

EVERY famous groundhog predicted the end of winter was near and Spring was on its way! Yahhhhhh!

Alyssa's Groundhog Story

“Once upon a time, there was a little groundhog. He went for a walk to his grandma’s house to give her a basket of goodies. When he was walking home, he saw his shadow. He said to everyone, “Six more weeks of winter.”

Chevaz's Groundhog Poem

“10 little groundhogs jumping on the bed,
one got off to go to bed.
9 little groundhogs jumping on the bed,
one jumped off and went on south.
8 little groundhogs jumping on the bed,
one went home and went to bed.
7 little groundhogs jumping on the bed,
one fell down and broke his head.
6 little groundhogs jumping on the bed,
one got sick and went to bed.
5 little groundhogs jumping on the bed,
one got really tired and went to bed.
4 little groundhogs jumping on the bed,
one got off and went on west.
3 little groundhogs jumping on the bed,
one went to the doctor and went to bed.
2 little groundhogs jumping on the bed,
one went home and went on north.
1 little groundhog jumping on the bed,
one was sad and went to bed.”

Denis' Groundhog Tale

“Mr. Groundhog never saw his shadow. He was playing games and lying in his cave. He is too lazy, but he is being crazy. He went outside and fell; and saw spring coming.”

Frankie's Groundhog Problem

“5 little groundhogs sleeping in a bed.
One fell down and had a headache.
4 were in the bed,
one went out of bed and went outside.
3 little groundhogs sleeping.
One was feeling sick and jumped out of bed.
Now there are 2 little groundhogs sleeping on a bed.
One went outside.
One little groundhog sleeping in the bed.”

Justin’s Poor Little Groundhogs

“One little, two little, three little groundhogs.
The first one fell and hurt its leg,
The second one fell over and hurt its leg, too.
The third one hurt his arm.”
Poor little groundhogs!

Kennedy’s Groundhog Song

“One little, two little, three little groundhogs,
Four little, five little, six little groundhogs,
Seven little, eight little, nine little groundhogs,
Ten little groundhogs living in a hole.
Trying to get out to see his shadow.
So he went back in his hole a-hiding
He kept on sleeping for the rest of the winter.
He’ll come out of his hole for spring time.”

Kris’ Happy Groundhog!

“Mr. Groundhog lives in a cave under the sun,
Where he has some fun playing tag with some friends,
And waiting for the sun…

Then February 2 comes
And he does not see his shadow on that day!!!
Then he says...Hip, Hip, Hooray!!!”

Leona's Groundhog Mission

“Oh Groundhog, Oh Groundhog.
When are you coming out?”

“I will never come out!
Not once, not twice, never ever… ever!
Only if spring is coming to town.”

“Oh, but you have to come out. We have to wait for the hunters to come.”

"Why?"

“So they can see too!” (If winter is coming.)

When the hunters got there… spring was coming to town.
(That’s when Groundhog went back into his hole to hide!)

Shania's Groundhog Song

“One little, two little, three little groundhogs,
Four little, five little, six little groundhogs,
Seven little, eight little, Nine little groundhogs,
ten little groundhogs out today...”

Shania’s Groundhog Poem

“Groundhog tells us
if it’s winter.
Groundhog tells us
if it’s spring and summer.
If he sees his shadow,
it will be six more weeks of winter.
If he doesn’t …
then Spring is coming soon.
Is there a shadow?
Ask the Groundhog!”

Shania’s Groundhog Story

“One day a little groundhog was trying to open his eyes so he could see the Sun, but he couldn’t see, because he was too little to see the Sun. He cried for so long. Then a few days later, he opened his eyes and saw the sun.”

Shawna’s Groundhog Song

“One little, two little, three little groundhogs,
Four little, five little, six little groundhogs,
Seven little, eight little, Nine little groundhogs,
ten little groundhogs.” “Groundhog tells us if it’s springtime.
Groundhog tells us if it’s winter.”
“If you see your shadow,
then it’s six more weeks of winter.”
“I sure hope the Spring comes soon!”

Tamara’s Groundhog Song

“One little, two little, three little groundhogs,
Four little, five little, six little groundhogs,
Seven little, Eight little, nine little groundhogs,
Ten groundhogs at home.

Sleeping in their cozy hole,
Lazy groundhogs…
Popping out their heads.
Nosy groundhogs…
‘Hey, did you see that one?’
Sneaky groundhogs…
Groundhogs, groundhogs everywhere!
